Plot summary

The love triangle

Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is the daughter of Pundit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale), a renowned proponent of Indian classical music. It is announced that a young man named Sameer (Salman Khan) will be arriving to stay with the Darbar family, as he wants to grasp the intricacies of Indian classical music under the guidance of the Pundit. He is accommodated in Nandini's room, causing her to shift elsewhere and, hence, take a dislike to Sameer. At first, the two tease and prank one another, but soon enough, they fall deeply in love. The two share romantic moments during several family events, including weddings and festivals.

One day, the couple is caught rehearsing their wedding vows by the Pundit. The old man is enraged since he has already planned Nandini's wedding with the young lawyer Vanraj (Ajay Devgn), who had fallen in love with her during her cousin Anu's wedding. Sameer is banished from the household, and the Pundit quits singing since he believes Nandini has brought shame to the family.

The journey to Italy

Nandini reluctantly marries Vanraj but refuses to accept him as her husband or consummate their marriage. She writes letters to Sameer asking him to come back for her but does not post them. Vanraj finds out about Nandini's letters and realizes that she is still in love with Sameer. He decides to take her to Italy to find Sameer and reunite them.

In Italy, they face many obstacles as they do not speak Italian and have no clue about Sameer's whereabouts. They eventually find him working as a waiter at a restaurant. Nandini is overjoyed to see him but hesitates to approach him as she feels guilty for betraying Vanraj. Sameer also sees Nandini but does not talk to her as he thinks she is happy with her husband.

The final choice

Vanraj confronts Sameer and tells him that he has brought Nandini to meet him. He asks him to elope with her or forget her forever. Sameer agrees to elope with Nandini but asks for some time to prepare for their departure. He also thanks Vanraj for his generosity and sacrifice.

Nandini realizes that Vanraj has done so much for her happiness and that he truly loves her. She also feels grateful for his kindness and respect towards her family. She decides to stay with Vanraj and bids farewell to Sameer at the train station.

Vanraj and Nandini return to India as a happy couple. They are welcomed by their families who have reconciled with them.
